Magtkritik. Forfatteren Max Brooks skyder al coronaskyld på Kina og Donald Trump, som han mener skal faktatjekkes for alt. Men alle borgere har et ansvar.

”Et løg af lag på lag-løgn”.

Sådan karakteriserede forfatteren Max Brooks præsident Donald Trumps håndtering af coronakrisen, da han i sidste uge blev interviewet i National Public Radio, USA’s ikke-kommercielle public service-radio.

Max Brooks – søn af den legendariske komiker Mel Brooks – er forfatter til flere bøger fra en dystopisk verden, og som research til sin post-apokalyptiske zombi-roman World War Z (2006), foretog han omfattende research i en række amerikanske kriseberedskaber: ”Vi har et system, som skatteyderne har betalt for, så vi kunne være klar i en situation præcis som denne. Men vi har været katastrofalt langsomme og uorganiserede fra første dag,” sagde han i interviewet.

Det system, Max Brooks primært hentyder til, er Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, der har ansvar for indsatsen mod blandt andet smitsomme sygdomme. Men i stedet for at aktivere systemet, tøvede præsidenten med at anerkende virusen som en trussel, og han har undladt at benytte lovens muligheder for at tvinge private virksomheder til at producere masker, handsker og andre nødvendige værnemidler. Det hele begynder i en kinesisk provins (det fremgår ikke af romanen, men måske opstår mutationen, fordi nogen spiser et skældyr?), hvorfra virusen spreder sig til hele verden via mennesker på flugt, menneskesmugling og illegal organhandel. Myndighederne reagerer ved at undertrykke nyheden om infektionen. De truer læger, der prøver at slå alarm, til tavshed. Røgsløret giver virusen mulighed for at sprede sig over hele landet, udover grænserne og til resten af verden. ”Lyder det bekendt?” spurgte Max Brooks retorisk i et essay i Washington Post (den 27. februar), som meget passendeudkommer under et officielt slogan, der lyder lidt som titlen på en James Bond-film: ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’.

I artiklen forklarer Max Brooks, at han henlagde sin roman til Kina, fordi han skulle bruge et land med en enorm befolkning og et veludviklet transportsystem, som virusen kunne rejse med. ”Men,” skriver han, ”jeg havde også behov for et autoritært regime med stærk kontrol over medierne (…) Når resten af verden opdagede, hvad der var ved at ske, ville det være for sent. Ånden ville være ude af flasken, og vores art ville kæmpe for sin overlevelse.”

Max Brooks fortæller, at der var kinesiske forlæggere, der viste stor interesse for at oversætte og udgive romanen. Der var bare et enkelt problem. De bad forfatteren om, at fjerne alle kapitlerne om Kina eller at opfinde et fiktivt land, hvor virusen kunne opstå. De forklarede, at den slags politisk sensitive materiale kunne ødelægge ethvert forlag. Naturligvis kunne forfatteren ikke leve med den slags indgreb, så han afviste at udgive World War Z i Kina, og i interviewet med NPR lægger Max Brooks ikke fingre imellem i sin kritik: ”Hver eneste døde vil blive lagt direkte for fødderne af Det Kommunistiske Parti. De har al magten, derfor har de også ansvaret,” siger han.

Men Max Brooks sørger for at dele sol og vind lige – de store supermagter får så hatten passer, ikke mindst Donald Trump. Om ham siger han, at der er nødvendigt at faktatjekke alt, hvad han siger under coronakrisen:

”Vi må være meget forsigtige med hvem, vi lytter til, fordi panik kan sprede sig hurtigere end en virus. Udover at holde social afstand til hinanden, skal vi praktisere god faktahygiejne. Vi skal være opmærksomme på, hvad vi tager til os – og hvad vi giver fra os igen. Vi skal ikke kolportere misinformation og rygter. Vi skal passe på, at vi ikke skræmmer hinanden til at gøre irrationelle og farlige ting. Vi skal lytte til eksperter, ikke til tilfældigheder fra nettets konspirationsteoretikere.”

Men Max Brooks nøjes ikke med at kritisere Kina og Trump. Han vender også skytset mod befolkningen:

”Når vi en dag ser tilbage på alt dette, vil vi – alle os individuelle borgere – blive nødt til at vurdere vores personlige ansvar, fordi vi selv vælger vores ledere. Og uanset hvor meget vi vil elske at skyde skylden på denne historisk inkompetente kaptajn på vores statsskib, har vi selv givet skibet lov til at ruste i fundamentet. Det er ikke kun præsident Trumps skyld, at institutioner som Centers for Disease Control and Prevention har været underfinansieret i årevis. Det er ikke kun præsident Trumps fejl at vi har givet vaccinationsmodstandere mulighed for at sprede fejlinformation over hele landet. Det er ikke kun præsident Trumps fejl, at vi har skabt et samfund til gavn for teknologier, der sigter på overflod frem for modstandskraft.
