Gud og Satan. Mørkets Fyrste bliver kæreste med med fraskilt, midaldrende kvinde og gør hende til chef for Institut for Tegn på Tidens Ende.

Det lyder som rendyrket rugbrødsrealisme: Rakel er midaldrende og fraskilt, manden fandt en yngre model. Nu er hun flyttet fra villa til rækkehus, hvor hun prøver at finde sig til rette i ydmygelsen.

Men det fortsætter som et bulgakovsk ekko: Rakel finder en lem i haven. En trappe fører ned til en slags reception, hvor en uniformeret kvinde sælger billetter til Helvede. Hun forklarer, at Helvede er en nonprofitorganisation: ”Vi bestræber os konstant på at korrigere det negative billede, offentligheden har af os, men vi mangler midler og fægter os frem fra dag til dag. Det er ikke billigt at drive et helvede, at du ved det.”

Rakel køber et rabatkort, og strejfer rundt og ser de døde lide alverdens pinsler. Hun møder selveste Satan, en flot mand, ikke specielt diabolsk, og der opstår hurtigt sød musik mellem Rakel og Mørkets Fyrste. Satan er en hensynsfuld elsker, han lytter og spørger. Og han fortæller om sin søster, Gud, og deres arbejdsfordeling. Han har fuld forståelse for Guds opgaver, men er meget kritisk overfor den måde hun har behandlet sin søn, Satans nevø, på. At lade den stakkels dreng lide for hele menneskeheden, det var for groft.

Satan og Rakel er et godt par. Han tilbyder hende som daglig leder af Institut for Tegn på Tidens Ende, hvor hun skal udtænke scenarier, som Satan og hans søster kan sætte i værk for at plage menneskene. Og synger sange om hendes miskundhed og om hendes frelse og om riget, der ligesom skal komme. Det er virkelig til grin.”

Overfor ikke-troende læsere høster Erlend Loe lavthængende frugter med sin religionssatire. Nogen troende vil nok finde romanen gudsbespottende, andre vil være henrivende ligeglade. Hvorfor Rakel hedder Rakel og ikke Solvejg eller Silje, lader sig vist ikke opklare. Et gammeltestamenteligt navn er det jo, men her er ikke nogen syvårssymbolik. For norske læsere er der måske nok et budskab i, at Satan taler nynorsk, men den sprogpointe kan ikke genskabes i oversættelse.

Erlend Loes aparte ironi er ofte et godt værnemiddel mod tristesse, og bag hans naivistisk-subtile stil findes altid, og også i Helvede, oprigtige bestræbelser på at skildre et enkelt menneskes forsøg på at fatte tilværelsens gåde. Her er det løfterige budskab, at forladthedskrisen ikke nødvendigvis er en endestation, men en vendeplads. Og den ny livsinspiration kan komme fra uventet hold. Erlend Loe har dog skrevet betydeligt skarpere om religiøsitet og civilisationskritik før. Helvede er mere klinte, end hvede.
