Det er der mange der mener i Norge, hvor debatten for tiden går højt om et par bøger om massemorderen Anders Behring Breivik og hans mor.
Journalisten Marit Christensens skandalebiografi, Moren, om Breiviks mor, Wenche, der døde i marts, er en af bøgerne i fokus. Wenche Behring Breivik samarbejdede først med forfatteren, men trak til sidst sin accept tilbage kort før hun døde, og det er derfor uklart om bogen er udkommet på et utilstrækkeligt juridisk grundlag. Desuden ligger Marit Christensen i åbent skænderi med den internationalt berømte journalist Åsne Seierstad, som hun har anklaget for at tiltvinge sig adgang til den døende Wenche på hospitalet for at tappe hende for oplysninger til En av oss – en fortelling om Norge.

Aftenpostens kommentator Thorstein Hvattum har skrevet, at bogen om Wenche ville blive dømt i Pressens Faglige Utvalg (den norske Pressenævn), fordi den forbryder sig mod elementære moralske spilleregler i forholdet mellem journalisten og kilden.
Også forfatteren Frank Rossavik mener i Morgenbladet, at de regler, der gælder for journalister og er formuleret i en række selvpålagte etiske retningslinjer for de norske medier, bør gælde for forfattere, der skriver bøger. De presseetiske regler i Norge er kendt som Vær varsom-plakaten, første gang vedtaget i 1936, senest revideret i 2007 og forankret i fællesforbundet for alle de norske medieorganisationer, Norsk Presseforbund. De 17 etiske paragraffer slutter med en formaning: “Ord og bilder er mektige våpen, misbruk dem ikke!”
Nu er spørgsmålet så bare, om også forfattere skal arbejde med etiske retningslinjer, når de skriver sagprosa, og om en forlægger skal være underlagt et kodeks for god forlagsskik. Hvad adskiller en artikel i et dagblad fra en bog på et forlag? Og hvad sker der, når etablerede medier citerer kontroversielle historier fra en bog uden at vide, om oplysningerne er korrekte eller om berørte personer har fået mulighed for at give deres besyv til bogens forfatter?
Et eksempel fra det danske bogmarked: For få uger siden udkom eks-fodboldspilleren Peter Graulunds erindringer, fortalt til Søren Højlund Carlsen. Det gik mildest talt ikke godt hos anmelderne. Flere steder blev bogen spist af med én stjerne, og Jyllands-Postens anmelder skrev, at bogen forsøger at sætte Peter Graulund på en piedestal, men ender som en skamstøtte.
Bogen kastede også en etikdebat af sig i pressekredse. Hovedpersonen fortæller nemlig om en tidligere holdkammerats påståede utroskab. Disse passager var – meget bevidst – blevet lækket til fodboldnetmagasinet Kontra, som bragte historien før bogen udkom. Den omtalte fodboldspiller truede derefter med bål, brand og advokater, og ghostwriteren og Turbine-forlaget i Århus besluttede i sidste øjeblik at tage passagerne ud af den endelige bog.
Så gik Jyllands-Posten og Ekstra Bladet ind i sagen og bragte Peter Graulunds påstande om kollagens utroskab. Til fagbladet Journalisten har mediejurist Peter Lind Nielsen sagt, at avisernes artikler på basis af bogens manuskript både er i strid med de presseetiske regler, fordi den kritiserede part ikke får lov at komme til orde, og sandsynligvis også i strid med straffeloven. Sportsredaktør på Jyllands-Posten Christian Thye-Petersen var ikke sen til at erkende: “Det er en ren tilståelsessag fra vores side. Vi viderebringer personlige oplysninger om den her spiller, og det skal vi ikke.” Men hvad med Turbine? Hvilket etisk regelsæt er forlaget omfattet af?
Hvis en person ikke kan acceptere indholdet, skal han eller hun have ret til en slags genmæle i en fodnote, i en efterskrift eller på forlagets hjemmeside, mener Frank Rossavik. Hvis bogen senere bliver dømt af det etiske nævn, skal forlaget publicere den, ganske som medierne er forpligtet til at offentliggøre domme Pressens Faglige Utvalg.
I 2008 skrev den norske forfatter og samfundsdebattør, Paul Bjerke, en artikel om det han kaldte det “forlagsjournalistiske kompleks”, den kommercielle forlagsbranches og den kommercielle presses fællesinteresse, hvor aviser og andre medier glad og gerne gengiver kontroversielle historier fra bøger op til udgivelsen. Det nyder forfatter og forlag godt af, fordi det markedsfører bogen – og aviserne selv får gratis kioskbaskerhistorier serveret på et sølvfad.
Paul Bjerke efterlyste en proffesionsetik i forlagsbranchen, og det samme gør nu Frank Rossavik. De etiske køreregler vil øge forfatternes frihed, ikke begrænse den, mener han og efterlyser en debat mellem forlag og forfattere om, hvordan man kan arbejde med etiske retningslinjer for journalistiske bøger.
