Anmeldelse i Weekendavisen den 13. december 2013.

White trash. Jacob Skyggebjerg romandebuterer med opdateret dansk dirty realism.

Han kom fra den sociale underklasse, var en småkriminel rod, blev anbragt i en plejefamilie, hutlede sig igennem, røg en masse hash, kom på højskole – og mødte en lærer, der inspirerede ham til at skrive om sit eget liv og introducerede ham til en forlægger. Og så skrev han om sin baggrund, om forældrenes misbrug og omsorgssvigt, om svindel og stoffer. Råt, usentimentalt, indigneret.

Nej, det er ikke Yahya Hassan, jeg taler om. Og Jacob Skyggebjerg – for sådan hedder han – vil hverken komme til at lukke luftrum eller sælge 80.000 eksemplarer af sin debutbog på et par måneder, for hvem gider interessere sig for et offer og et vidne, der ikke lige kommer fra ghettoen, men er rundet af det danske kulturmiljø, som vi kan kalde provinsens white trash? Hvem vil sige, at med ham falder skællene fra øjnene, og at vi nu får det autentiske vidnesbyrd om et liv på bunden af den danske kultur? Og hvem vil anklage ham for at generalisere: Sådan er alle jyder ikke!

Yahya Hassan-parallellerne er til at få øje på, omend skæbnerne og situationerne ikke er identiske, men Jacob Skyggebjergs roman fremstår ikke desto som endnu én i den lange række af moderne danske fiktionaliserede virkelighedsfremstillinger, og skal man tro et interview med forfatteren i Information for et par uger siden, er der mindst lige så meget virkelighed som fiktion i den illusionsløse Vor tids helt, som periodevis er noget af det mest pågående prosa, jeg har læst i år.

Romanens Jacob vokser op i et provinshul med et par alkoholiserede forældre og i stanken fra en industrivirksomhed, der forarbejder landbrugets dyrekadavere, flytter til Århus for at læse til journalist, dropper ud af studiet og havner i København, hvor han arbejder på en småkagefabrik i forstæderne, læser aftenskolespansk, hænger ud på værtshusene, prøver at være kæreste med Carina – og hustler sig igennem med sprut, stoffer og ærgerlig sex med forsømte kvinder.

Jacob opdager at hans far slet ikke er hans far, og han har en teori om, at den fordrukne mor blev besvangret af en alien. Måske forklarer det – for ham selv og for læseren – hvorfor Jacob er sådan en stodder. Men hvordan kan man også være et helt menneske med den baggrund?

Som liv ligner romanen al den fortabthed og alt det københavnske lort, som vi bare vender ryggen til, når vi går gennem byens gader. Som litteratur ligner den Jonas T. Bengtssons forræderiske København, Mikael Josephsens fortabte Svendborg, Jakob Ejersbos brutale Ålborg og Kristian Bang Foss’ grimme og grinagtige arbejdspladsportræt i Stormen i 99.

Vor tids helt er altså opdateret dansk dirty realism. Hør bare, hvordan bogen åbner med et citat fra romanens begyndelse: “Jeg er vokset op i en mødding med døden løbende om knæene. At blive bundet til køkkenstolen med lyseblå hampereb. At mærke sine kræfter forsvinde der. At acceptere tilværelsen. At vokse op i den her rasende storm.”

Den her rasende storm! Det er ikke stormen i 99, men stormen i 2013 (jeg skriver i øvrigt dette torsdag aften, mens decemberstormen Bodil buldrer ind over landet), og Jacob Skyggebjergs storm er ikke et meterologisk fænomen, men et menneskeligt, en social storm, en storm af svigt, en storm med en stigmatiserende effekt på fortælleren.

Skønlitteraturen indfrier for tiden mange krav om autenticitet og emotionel dokumentarisme, der sætter problemer under debat, og Jacob Skyggebjerg støtter sin virkelighedsbeskrivelse ved at skrive om eksisterende mennesker under deres rigtige navne, for eksempel efterskolelederen Kay Flinker fra Vejlefjord og den ækle storbytosse, nu afdøde Bo Warming, som fortælleren lejer et kælderlokale af i den legendarisk misligholdte racistiske rotterede på Bjelkes Allé, Nørrebro, hvor ejeren blandt andet eksperimenterede med sin egen afføring. Det er hinsides al klamhed, beskrevet med nøgtern kynisme.

Jacob Skyggebjerg tilbyder gavmildt sig selv til debatten om forfatternes selvfremstilling, sådan som han står på romanens forside i et krat af visne grangrene (tror jeg) i bar overkrop med arrogant gangsterattitude, guldkæde om halsen, joint i den ene hånd, fuckfinger til verden og en pistol stukket ned mod skridtet i linningen på bukserne med den moderigtige hængerøv. Henover det nøgne bryst står romanens fede titel i gotiske guldbogstaver, tilrettelagt af den hippe designer Thoms Joakim Winther på Sofie Amalie Klougarts interessante, men affekterede, portrætfoto. På den måde er Jacob Skyggebjerg – som en anden af årets mest udtalte (selvbeskrivende) forfattere Asta Oliva Nordenhoff med Det nemme og det ensomme – flyttet fra klappen til forsiden, symbolsk sat i scene som sin egen persona. Ingen falsk beskedenhed her.

Titlen, Vor tids helt, har en stramt styret sarkasme over sig, for romanen handler snarere om vor tids ikke-helt, en vind og skæv stemme, der resigneret lever på afstand af den sociale værdighed og menneskelige empati, som han aldrig fik i arv fra de fordrukne forældre.

Virkelighed? Fiktion? Fiktionliseret virkelighed. Til Information har Jacob Skyggebjerg sagt, at romanen er “transkriberet virkelighed, det har fundet sted, men det har lige været inde og vende.” Som sådan er der altså tale om en debut i den litterære tidstendens’ udtrådte hovedspor, og vi kan derfor læse Jacob Skyggebjerg som et socialt vidne ala Yahya. Der er fandeme skummelt derude i den danske provins, med al dens stank af døde dyr, narko, druk og omsorgssvigt.

Jacob Skyggebjerg skriver potent, men periodevis også uden dybde og mål, men alt i alt er romanen både stærk og vigtig, et opmærksomhedsskabende godt bud på moderne, grim socialrealisme, og forfatterens debut sætter et hårdt punktum for romanåret 2013.
