Novellen, denne ædle genre, har godt tag i forfatterne for tiden – selvom forfatterne ikke altid har lige godt tag i novellen. Et af de helt nye navne er Henriette Rostrup, der debuterer med de ti historier i Afkom. Ifølge pressemeddelelsen fra forlaget Bazar er der tale om ”fortættede fortællinger” og ”tragikomiske rystelser i den menneskelige grundvold”, og selvom der er gode ansatser i samlingen, anbefaler jeg at vi lige spiser brød til.

Titelnovellen handler om en enlig kvinde, der tager en forladt redefuld af dueæg ind i stuen for at udruge dem på varmeapparatet, hvilket blot fører til at en stank af råddenskab breder sig i lejligheden. Der hviler en god, syg desperation over historien, som dog ikke er samlingens mest interessante, og som bogtitel betragtet er den da også både kedelig og bovlam. Hvem gider gribe en bog der hedder Afkom?

Nej, åbningshistorien har helt anderledes swung i overskriften, den hedder Grusomme historier om børn. Det er en rå historie om en ung kvinde, der samler avisomtaler af vuggedød, trafikdrab, incest, mobning, hjertefejl, kromosomfejl, fødselsdepressioner m.m. som hun kategoriserer og limer ind i notesbøger. Hver dag læser og genlæser hun – ”med forbudt fryd” – de tragiske historier, mens hun knuger sin bamse ind til sig, klar til at holde ham op for øjnene, når de værste passager kommer. Det lyder sygt, det er sygt, og det er en gedigen, sort novelle.

Henriette Rostrup kommer ikke med fred, og hun kommer hverken med forsonende eller opmuntrende historier. Hun samler nemlig selv, som sin hovedperson i Grusomme historier om børn, på episoder hvor livet står stille eller tager en tragisk drejning. Tag nu f.eks. novellen Sidste kapitel, der skildrer en lykkelig familie på vej ud af døren til den ældste datters konfirmation.

I et fortroligt øjeblik vil moren pludselig være forbløffende kærlig ved faren, men i stedet for det planlagte tungekys, kommer hun til at skubbe til hans kaffekop, så den hvide skjorte bliver stænket til. Moren prøver at genoprette den gode stemning, men faren straffer hende med en iskold bemærkning om, at hun opfører sig som en tæve i brunst. Da skjorten er vasket og strøget og resten af familien er ude i bilen, kommer posten med en kuvert, som faren åbner. Der falder nogle billeder ud, som han i en fart skjuler i reolen.

Vi får ikke at vide, hvad billederne forestiller, eller hvem der har sendt dem. Men vi kan danne os vores egne ideer og indtryk ud fra farens ekstreme reaktion. Der er tilsyneladende noget kompromitterende i ethvert menneskes liv. Spørgsmålet er blot, hvornår vi bliver afsløret, og hvilken konsekvens, vi så er parat til at drage.

Henriette Rostrup kender ingen bløde mellemveje. Man kan kalde det skæbnefortællinger, sære fortællinger eller sorte fortællinger.
