To mænd, Oslo-forfatteren Morten og hans gode ven Hugo fra Engeløya i Lofoten i det nordlige Norge, sejler ud i en gummibåd. De har en halsbrækkende mission i fjordene mod Atlanterhavet: at fange et tre til fem meter stort dyr på cirka sekshundrede kilo, en halvblind kalorius med kort, rund snude, lange parasitter hængende ud af øjnene, cigarformet krop og relativt små finner, sugelæber og sylespidse savtaktænder, altså en somniosus micropcephalus, bedre kendt som grønlandshajen.

Vi vender tilbage til dyret fra dybet om lidt. Først et par ord om denne litterære genre, som amerikanerne kalder creative non fiction, og som vi kunne kalde det ”den fortællende fagbog”. Det er et stykke sprænglærd kulturessaystik med et autentisk forfatterjeg i centrum, skrevet med skønlitterære stiltræk, men forpligtet på en erfaringsbaseret virkelighed uden fiktive tilsætningsstoffer – tværtimod med et stærkt encyklopædisk krydderi.

I Norge har særligt to bøger af denne slags ramt en guldåre i bogmarkedet inden for de seneste ti år. Først kom Lars Lenths meditative fluefiskerfilosofi Den samme flod, og dernæst Lars Myttings Brænde, der slet og ret handlede om, ja nemlig – at hugge brænde. Og i Sverige har Frederik Sjöberg fået millioner og milliarder af læsere til at gå i Fluefælden, hvor hans fascination af insekter bliver udgangspunktet for anekdotiske livsfilosofier.

Seneste eksempel er Morten A. Strøksnes’ Havbogen – eller kunsten at fange en kæmpehaj fra en gummibåd på et stort hav gennem fire årstider (lige lovlig kæk undertitel), en prisbelønnet bestseller, oversat til tyve sprog, og hvor end den kommer fra, kalder kritikerne den et mesterværk. Også den tager os ud i naturen, det giver sig selv.

At læse Havbogen er sandt nok en udelt fornøjelse, helt på linje med at se en velproduceret dokumentar fra BBC World Nature, hvor man bare bliver beriget med viden om vores vidunderlige verden. Personligt kunne jeg sagtens klare mig uden dobbeltportrættet af de to mænd og deres venskab, for dybest set interesserer de mig ikke spor. Men det gør deres besættelse af grønlandshajen og al dens hypnotiske, magiske magnetisme. Den slags smitter.

Morten A. Strøksnes spørger sig selv: ”Kan man leve sig ind i grønlandshajens verden?” Umiddelbart er svaret naturligvis nej. Men han gør et begavet forsøg på at skildre dyrets virkelighed. Den glider lydløst rundt, som en maskine af kød, med giftstoffer i spækket. Den føler hverken glæde, sorg eller smerte, men mærker nok en slags mekanisk tilfredshed, når den hugger en sæl eller et råddent hvalådsel i sig, tænker han: ”De eneste levende væsner, den har kontakt med, er dem den spiser, bortset fra når æggene bliver befrugtet, uden glæde eller ømhed. Afkommet udvikler tidligt store tænder og begynder livet som kannibalistiske rovdyr i livmoderen, hvor den stærkeste æder sine søskende og kommer til verden alene.”

Havbogen er på overfladen en fortælling om Mortens og Hugos vanvittige forehavende og et nærportræt af grønlandshajen. Men kun på overfladen. Som forfatteren ved bedre end nogen, ligger hele essensen nede i mørkedybet, nede på havsens bund, hvor grønlandshajen huserer. Bogens særlige styrke er nemlig dens omfattende orientering i den marine biologis betydning for vores liv. Dernede, i de utilgængelige og uudforskede dybder, findes nemlig de fabelagtige rigdomme af plankton, som Morten A. Strøknæs skildrer med betydelig poesi. Hvem tænker på, at plankton ikke bare udgør hvalernes aftensmad, men også producerer mere ilt til os heroppe på landjorden, end alverdens planter tilsammen – livgivende plankton, som trues af klimaforandringer og plasticforurening.

Havbogen er først og fremmest en overlegen og dybt interessant kompilering af havets og hajens natur- og kulturhistorie (men ikke ét ord om Dødens gab!), dernæst en noget uforløst skildring af den menneskelige besættelse. Jeg mærker ikke, at fantasterne Morten og Hugo har det som kaptajn Ahab, der koste hvad det vil skal besejre Moby Dick. Men pyt med det, jeg væltes encyklopædisk om kuld, og det føles inderlig godt.
