Skygger fra fortiden

Åh, de gode gamle firsere: I den lille fynske flække Ullerslev, spionerer Martin og Kent på pigerne, når de bader efter håndboldtræningen. I skolen hylder de lærerne ud af den, kaster med mælkekartoner og bliver dødsfjender med med slagsbroren Søren Bendixen, der bl.a. bruger Martins hoved som toiletbørste. Når jobbet som flaskedreng og ugens fodboldtræning er overstået, står den på en omgang af mors brændende kærlighed, inden vi klæder om til gulerodsbukser og Nik Kershaw-frisure og turen går til forfest med Pisang Ambon og halbal. Hvad er størst? Frygten for onde Søren eller forelskelsen i kønne Heidi?

Thomas Aagaars Skovmand lægger ud med en omgang gedigen firsernostalgi i dette letlæste mix af dybt traditionel ungdomsroman og klassisk opklaringskrimi, hvor Martin prøver at afdække omstændighederne bag Kents død. Siden 1985 har han været overbevist om, at det hele var en uheldig drukneulykke i åen, men da han for en kort stund vender tilbage til forældrenes gravsted i den barndomsby, han har vendt ryggen, bliver han indhentet af skygger fra fortiden. Som romanens titel siger: Hvad skete der den nat?

Plotten er så simpelt, at det kan referes på bagsiden af en lille serviet. Dertil er det så stereotypt, at man synes at man har læst det hele tidligere. F.eks. minder Ullerslev ikke så lidt om Erling Jepsens portræt af Højer i Frygtelig lykkelig, og Søren Bendixen er som snydt ud af næsen på ondskabsfulde Jørgen i samme roman.

Når det kommer til konfrontationer og acition, er vi også i velkendte skabeloner, ikke mindst med en ægte gangsterscene i en grusgrav, hvor rollerne pludselig byttes om og det hele udarter til en ægte cliffhanger og et spørgsmål om moralsk retfærdighed. Og så er der et par afgørende sekvenser, som det er svært at fæste lid til: At Martin skulle have fortrængt den nat hvor Kent døde, og først kommer i tanker om det, da han tilfældigt ser hans gravsten, er i bedste fald utroværdigt, i værste fald ikke foldet nær nok ud som et psykologisk fænomen. Og at … nej, jeg må hellere lade være med at røbe romanens cirkelslutning og opklaring, der både rummer det dramatiske og romantiske højdepunkt, men så meget vil jeg sige: det holder ikke når der går I Know What You Did Last Summer i det, heller ikke selvom ”Last Summer” er skiftet ud med for 1985 og øksemorderen er en anden, end vi forventer!

Når dette er sagt, vil jeg faktisk gerne anbefale Hvad skete der den nat? som et udmærket generationsportræt og en krimi, der forsøger at overrumple læseren et par gange, hvilket delvis lykkes, ikke mindst til sidst, hvor Martin gør en overraskende opdagelse og spændingen stiger. Heldigvis har alle personerne en god vane med at fortælle, hvad der skete og hvad de gjorde, og på den måde er det muligt for Martin og nemt for læserne at trevle op i fortiden. Dybest set er der tale om en ungdomsroman med et overskueligt provinsplot, som vi der var unge i firserne kan læse for sjov – og vores teenagebørn for alvor.
