Måske, og desværre, er ujævnhed simpelthen Jacob Skyggebjergs litterære varemærke. Af forfatterskabets nu seks bøger (hvoraf jeg har læst de frem), vil jeg uden tøven udpege to stærkt læseværdige romaner, debuten Vor tids helt (2013) og Jalousi (2017), mens de øvrige enten kun har glimtvis kvalitet eller helt misser skiven.

Der går min klasselærer hører til i den sidste kategori. Hver gang romanen virker næstennødvendig, er den også en bleg reprise af noget, forfatteren har skrevet bedre om før, nemlig provinsens sociale elendighed under lugten af døde dyr henne fra kvægforbrændingsanstalten.

Året er 2000 i Løsning ved Hedensted mellem Vejle og Horsens. To år tidligere hittede TV2 med den sang, der meget elegant er lempet over i romanens titel. Det udløser en betinget refleks hos læsere, der er gamle nok til at synge med på det mærkelige spørgsmål: ”Vanilla, hvad nu?” Romanen selv nævner ikke sangen, men den digter utilsløret videre på dens tema: En midaldrende mandlig lærers drifter og følelser vækkes af en purung skolepige. Efter sommerferien fremstår den 15-årige Mira pludselig som en ung, meget ung, attraktiv kvinde. Åh, hendes smukke brune hud, åh det bare stykke mellem bukser og top, åh hendes duft af skolepigeparfume…

Denne lærer, Erling, er romanens formelle hovedperson, men ikke dens vigtigste. Han er 43 år, dansklærer, bor sammen med Irma, 43 år, matematiklærer. De er gamle kærester fra seminaret, børn har de aldrig fået, og passionen er fordampet. Nu bliver han bjergtaget af forbuden frugt, ganske som Humbert Humbert af nymfetten Lolita. Erling stjæler Miras parfume og tænker syndige tanker. Han begynder sågar at skrive digte, men hans midtlivskrise er triviel. Han drømmer, siger han selv, de samme drømme som alle andre forstenede mænd i Løsning. Dem rammer Jacob Skyggebjergs satire ret fint.

Det er uden tvivl romanens radikale børnevold og Irmas svigt, der fastholder opmærksomheden. Vi ved jo godt, både fra litteraturen og fra virkeligeheden, at børn kan begå forbrydelser, som vi ellers kun forbinder med en depraveret voksenmoral. Her har vi så begge dele.

At Irma og Mira er hinandens anagrammer, og dermed to sider af samme sag, springer nemt nok i øjnene, selvom det er uklart hvad denne spejling skal udtrykke. Uklar er også romanens happy end, men hvis den er et udtryk for Erlings og Irmas kyniske overlevelsesdrift, er det fint nok.

Der går min klasselærer er godt stof, men ærgerligt nok fortalt uden den bitre indignation, som Jacob Skyggebjerg før har udstrålet. Men som en stedspecifik østjysk provinsdepression, skal romanen nu nok blive læst flittigt på lærerværelset på Løsning Skole.
