I januar stod min signatur under en lille avisnote i Weekendavisen. Teksten var undseelig, uskyldig, uskadelig. Troede jeg. Men noten gjorde tusindvis af mennesker rasende. De sociale medier kogte. Det, jeg havde tænkt som en joke om Danmarks mest magtfulde forlag, så andre som en krænkelse af en kvinde.
Den famøse note handlede om det portrætfoto, der prydede forsiden af Gyldendals katalog over skønlitterære nyheder i foråret. Jeg troede ved første øjekast, at kvinden med det lange lyse hår var Alberte Winding, sanger og forfatter. Senere opdagede jeg, at forsideblikfanget i virkeligheden var Malou Aamund, debuterende romanforfatter, til hverdag direktør for Google Danmark.
Jeg skrev så denne note om forvekslingen, subtil og polemisk-satirisk. Jeg hentydede til, at Malou Aamund har en kendt mand, en kendt far og engang har været kæreste med kronprinsen. Jeg skrev med løs hånd og en drillesyg, blasert og ironisk distance rettet mod det, der præger store dele af den litterære gøglerbranche, nemlig kendte mennesker, der pludselig også er forfattere. Endelig spekulerede noten i, hvordan Malou Aamund havde haft tid til at skrive ”en tankevækkende roman om de vigtige livsvalg”, når hun til hverdag er direktør for Google Danmark. Måske havde hun fået et par fif af Hanne-Vibeke Holst, som hun er i VL-gruppe med.
Udover at gøre nar af landets suverænt mest magtfulde forlags markedsføring af en respekteret kvinde fra samfundets absolutte top, rummede noten en sprogparodi på skønhedsreklame, den efterabede offentlig sladder, og den tog selvironisk gas på sin egen signatur, der forvekslede de to kvinder med det lange lyse hår. Teksten handlede ikke om køn, men om kendthed.
Men jeg havde gjort regning uden vært. Det viste sig snart, at der var en ekstrem diskrepans mellem intention og reaktion. I hvert fald den reaktion, der kunne aflæses på de sociale medier, hvor forurettelsen fik vind i sejlene. En mand kaldte min note fornedrende mod kvinder, og Berlingskes kulturredaktør, Anne Sophia Hermansen, skrev at hun endnu havde til gode at se en mand blive reduceret til sit hår og sit ægteskab, og for det høstede hun flere tusinde likes. Jeg blev anklaget for at være misogyn, altså kvindefjendsk. Folk krævede mig fyret. Der var vistnok også abonnementsopsigelser.
Først tog jeg virakken i stiv arm. Det må shitstorme, hvis det shitstorme vil, tænkte jeg. Men senere blev jeg forskrækket over vredensnedbørens omfang, og det føltes mærkeligt og ret så utrygt at indse, at jeg havde taget så ufattelig meget fejl af, hvad man kan tillade sig at skrive, og hvad der er over grænsen. Aldrig nogensinde før har jeg vurderet en sproghandling så forkert.
Jeg havde tydeligvis ignoreret en identitetspolitisk opinion, der autopublicerer sin forargelse med et enkelt klik på de sociale medier, hvor meningsdannelsen accelererer sig selv. Men ikke kun folk på de sociale medier, også mennesker, der står mig nær, sagde at jeg havde jokket i spinaten. Så skrev jeg en privat mail til Malou Aamund og forklarede, hvad min hensigt havde været. Hun svarede imødekommende og afvæbnende. Noten havde ikke taget hendes nattesøvn, skrev hun, tydeligvis ikke spor krænket. Det var den første indikation, jeg fik, af at de sociale medier ikke bør forveksles med en egentlig offentlighed som sådan. De sociale medier udgør en slags segmenteret kvasi-offentlighed, og shitstorme opererer i deres egen parallelvirkelighed. Don’t we all? Jeg gør.
Selvcensur og den nye sprogform
Kritikerne belærte mig om, at det er irrelevant at skrive om andre menneskers udseende. Hvad tænkte du dog på, spurgte de? Hvad var pointen? Jo, pointen var, at Gyldendal jo havde sat Malou Aamund på forsiden af deres katalog af en årsag. De havde ikke valgt en ukendt ung mandlig forfatter med kikset frisure og nørdede briller. De havde naturligvis valgt en smuk, kendt og fotogen kvinde med en interessant baggrund og en roman med popularitetspotentiale hos et købedygtigt læsersegment.
Forlaget vil simpelthen gerne have at vi skal se Malou Aamund. Og jeg så hende. Men jeg er ikke sat i verden for at reproducere forlagets kommunikation. Jeg vil vride det en omgang. Det forstod Politikens litteraturredaktør Lise Garsdal vist til fulde, for i en kommentar om noten skrev hun, at det er svært at ”holde nallerne fra tastaturet”, når forlagene gør sig lækre på omslag og sociale medier: ”Lidt satirisk billedanalyse får man altså lyst til at bedrive,” skrev hun, og jeg opfattede det solidarisk. Og som digteren og forlæggeren Lars-Emil Woetmann fra mikroforlaget Kronstork skrev i et tweet: ”Tror i øvrigt at det er en kritikerpligt at stikke til forlagenes spekulationsudgivelser, fx til kendisforfatternes dybe iscenesættelse og elitenetværk, også selvom de er kvinder.”
Satire kan man jo enten trække på smilebåndet eller skuldrene af, synes jeg. Herregud. For mig var den lille note skrevet med en troldsplint i øjet, som så mange andre af den slags noter om bogbranche og bogfolk, jeg har skrevet gennem år og dag. Troldsplinten stammer fra det troldspejl, som Kay får i øjet i H.C. Andersens Snedronningen, og Den Danske Ordbog definerer det at skrive med en troldsplint i øjet som ”en anderledes, utraditionel, ofte humoristisk måde at opfatte virkeligheden på”.
Dansk litteraturjournalistik har en snart 200 år gammel tradition for den slags tekster. M.A. Goldschmidt begyndte på det, da han udgav fribytterbladet Corsaren i 1840’erne. Her hudflettede han alle, der var noget ved musikken. Det var også her den stolte tradition for sylespids tegnet avissatire debuterede i Danmark. Hvis Corsaren havde eksisteret i dag, ville den naturligvis sidde i haserne på både Gyldendal og på vordende romanforfattere fra overklassen og med en flot karriere i erhvervslivet. Polemisk magtkritik er jo hele satirens raison d’être.
På reaktionerne forstår jeg imidlertid, at man nu til dags helt skal undgå at skrive om en kvindes udseende. Kritikerkollega Bo Tao Michaëlis fik få uger tidligere ørerne i maskinen på grund af en tv-anmeldelse i Politiken (han skrev bl.a. at programværten Lise Rønne ‘vimsede’), og endnu en mandlig kollega, Kim Skotte, også fra Politiken, har også måttet forsvare og forklare sig, fordi han i en koncertanmeldelse havde skrevet om en kvindelig sanger, at hun var ultratynd og havde en spids næse.
Hvis nu jeg havde bodyshamet en magtesløs kvinde, ville jeg bøje mig i skam for de sociale mediers retfærdige vredesudvikling. Men jeg skrev jo bare at Malou Aamund havde lyst hår og fine linjer. Fine linjer er et begreb, jeg har lært at kende fra reklamer og medier som f.eks. Alt for Damerne. Fine linjer erstatter smilerynker, så vidt jeg har forstået. Fine linjer betyder vel at ansigtet har karakter og erfaring. Fine linjer er noget smukt. Men fine linjer er også en iagttagelse, som en mand i dag ikke må gøre sig.
I min oprigtige forvirring kontaktede jeg flere kvindelige forfattere og litterater, som jeg kender, og bad dem manuducere mig. Hvori bestod notens fadæse? Af deres svar konkluderer jeg, at jeg ikke er misogyn, men at noten i hvert fald var fordomsfuld. Det går hverken, at beskrive kvinder via mænd eller at skrive om deres udseende. Den slags er måske okay i indforstået selskab, men det hører ikke hjemme i det offentlige rum. Jeg befandt mig i en såkaldt kønsblind vinkel, og det fik jeg nu ren besked om på den hårde måde.
Mandlige kritikere må altså ikke skrive om kvinders udseende. Deri ligger jo en absolut begrænsning for al skrivning. Men for bare fem år siden beskrev jeg i en teateranmeldelse Johanne Louise Schmidt som ”tynd og lang som en finsk birkestamme med hår som en afblomstret mælkebøtte”. Jeg skrev, at hun ”ser både skøn og skør ud i variationer af laks og lyserødt”, og jeg fremhævede hendes ”rå, ru, sjove og sexede stemme”.
Ville jeg turde skrive sådan i dag? Det håber jeg da. Men jeg har opdaget – på den hårde måde – at der er nye standarder for, hvordan mænd bør skrive om kvinders udseende. Jeg ville ønske at jeg ærligt og redeligt kunne sige, at jeg til hver en tid vil trodse vreden på de sociale medier, men jeg må nok indrømme, at opviglingen imod mig har haft en effekt. Jeg har sagt til mandlige kolleger, at de bør tænke sig om både én, to og tre gange, hvis de skal skrive om en kvinde. Også selvom det er positivt. Et lille fejltrin kan betyde storshitstorm.
Da jeg skrev min tekst, var der intet der sagde mig, at den ville kunne skabe vrede og forargelse. De to avisredaktører, en næsten midaldrende mand og en yngre kvinde, der havde noten gennem hænderne, så heller ikke noget stormvarsel. Men vi så forkert.
Til min tvivlsomme trøst siger en forfatter til mig, at for to-tre år siden ville kun de færreste havde aflæst noten som problematisk, men i dag er den klart over grænsen. Jeg spørger så, om alle kritikerne, der krævede mig fyret og stemplede mig som misogyn, mon var ude på at injicere os alle med en slags selvcensur? Selvcensur er naturligvis ikke et ord, som en forfatter bryder sig om, men ja, selvcensur kan blive resultatet. I så fald, tænker jeg, er det et tilbageslag for de seneste mange års kultur- og værdikamp for ikke at lade ordenes råderum indsnævre.
Jeg vender mig mod endnu en gammel veninde, der ikke er nogen hvem som helst i de seneste 25 års kønsrolledebat, Nanna Kalinka Bjerke. Hun har et bud på, hvorfor reaktionen blev så hidsig:
”Alle tager alt for pålydende i dag, der er ikke plads til den begavede fornærmelse. Du kan ikke forvente at folk opfatter humoren i det, som du selv har tænkt ironisk, hvis ironien ikke er angivet med en emoji. Glasset var i forvejen fyldt. Det var ikke dig, der havde fyldt det, du var bare dråben.” Og så tilføjer hun, at jeg begik min fejl, fordi jeg ikke er ”trænet i den nye sprogform”.
Den nye sprogform! Nanna Kalinka Bjerke er befriende oprigtig og ærlig. Jeg havde ikke opdaget, at sprogets muligheder og sprogets begrænsninger havde forandret sig så drastisk. Jeg må have blundet en time, et døgn, et år. Troldsplinten er ikke længere gangbar.
I dag kan man ikke slippe af sted med ironisk distance. I dag bliver det, man skriver taget for pålydende. Jeg troede at vi levede i ånden fra 00’erne, og at hån, spot og latterliggørelse var en del af dagens dosis i Danmark. Og at man gerne måtte skyde på de magtfulde.
Jeg erkender at jeg skrev min tekst ud fra det, man kan kalde en blind vinkel, for blinde vinkler har vi alle uden undtagelse. Man kan måske sige, at dem, der faldt over mig, har en blind vinkel for satire og sarkasme – eller de har i hvert fald mistet tolerancen over for den slags. Jeg indrømmer derfor gerne, at jeg tog radikalt fejl af den del af tidsånden, der har viljen og magten til at definere ret og vrang på de sociale medier. Men dette gør mig samtidig foruroliget og forstemt. Ikke at jeg troede at definitionsmagten stadig kun tilhørte mænd og gamle medier. Jeg ved udmærket at meningsdannelsen er liberaliseret, jeg er indfødt tilhænger af ligestilling og opfatter mig selv som en sand ekvalist. Men samtidig mener jeg skråsikkert og uden tøven, at intet og ingen er tjent med, at vi kun taler i ét korrekt toneleje, dresseret, friseret, høvisk og upolemisk. Ingen er tjent med, at det sproglige råderum indsnævres eller at der ikke kan slås satiriske slag, lige som skæve. Det er imidlertid dét, tror jeg, der kan blive konsekvensen af den udskamning, som de sociale medier excellerer i. Men måske var min note blevet læst på en anden måde, hvis den var trykt som de skøre fake news-nyheder i Berlingskes Rokokoposten, eller hvis den var blevet brølet ud i radioen af en mand i dametøj.
Så hvad har jeg lært? Jeg har lært, at jeg helt uforvarende skrev en note, som overskred grænsen for mange menneskers tolerance. Jeg skrev fordomsfuldt, har jeg fået at vide, fordi min elitære kulturradikalisme tilsiger, at lyshårede kvinder ikke kan skrive romaner, og jeg har svært ved at erkende denne fordomsfuldhed. Hm. Nej. Det var altså ikke mit ærinde. Jeg skrev polemisk, fordi jeg har en idiosynkrasi overfor spekulativ markedsføring.
En ting mere, jeg har lært: at feminisme ikke handler så meget om køn, som om ideologi og sindelag. Mange kvinder har været tolerante overfor min tekst. Mange mænd har krævet mit hoved på et fad. Som Nanna Kalinka Bjerke har sagt til mig: ”I 90’erne var alt blasert og ironisk, i dag tager man alt alvorligt og for pålydende.”
Satiren og totalitarismen
Jeg har valgt at stå udenfor de sociale medier. Jeg er ikke en af dem, der er hoppet af, fordi tonen blev for rå, eller fordi jeg trængte til en digital detox. Jeg har aldrig været på nogen slags SoMe, og jeg er fuldt ud bevidst om, at jeg går glip af meget. Jeg er også fuldt ud bevidst om, at jeg, mens shitstormen rasede over mit syndige hoved, havde fraskrevet mig muligheden for at følge med, forsvare og forklare mig. Jeg læste ikke, hvad man skrev om mig, men fik det refereret af venner og kolleger, der fortalte mig at denne storm havde en betragtelig kategori.
Men jeg har lært noget vigtigt om shitstormes anatomi og om de sociale mediers dynamik. Da krisen brød ud, fik jeg nemlig en beroligende sms fra en journalist, der fortalte mig om en bog, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, af den engelske forfatter Jon Ronson. Ifølge ham melder modstemmer sig sådan cirka ti dage efter stormens udbrud. Og sandt nok. Det begyndte i min mailboks. Derefter fortsatte det som små dryp i avisen. Tag f.eks. Lise Busk-Jensen, der i et læserbrev præsenterede sig som feminist og litteraturforsker. Hun har bl.a. skrevet værker om store feministiske litterære ikoner og om romantikkens forfatterinder. Hun ved med andre ord alt om, hvad kvinder har måttet døje for at få en forfatterkarriere. Hun tolker min note konfliktfrit og med forståelse, ja hun finder faktisk en benovelse over at en kvinde med en betydelig baggrund nu vil gøre sig gældende som en forfatter, jeg skal have en holdning til. Sådan kan man tilsyneladende også forstå noten.
Der er på den ene side alt det, der skrives i det offentlige rum, og der er på den anden side det, der foregår i personlige møder og i den private indboks. Jeg har hørt fra utallige mennesker – ikke mindst i mediernes og litteraturens verden, hvor jeg har min daglige gang – at angrebet på min note var ude på hysteriets overdrev.
Kvinder, der har en offentlig profil som journalistiske og litterære feminister, har fortalt mig, at de uden problemer læste noten i den ånd, den var skrevet. Andre har sagt, at de måske ikke fandt noten specielt morsom, men at reaktionerne til gengæld var langt ude på overdrevet. Og en mand, der både har professionel forstand på journalistik, forlæggeri og satire, har sagt til mig, at han med det samme vidste, at noten ville bringe mig i problemer.
Mennesker vurderer situationer forskelligt. Og vi ser på de samme ord med fuldkommen flydende opfattelser af deres gangbarhed eller mangel på legitimitet. Det har rystet mig noget, at det er så nemt at gå så meget galt af hinandens grænser og opfattelser af sjov, satire og slag i bolledejen. Jeg søgte jo ikke vrede eller konflikt.
Måske, tænker jeg, er der forskel på, hvordan man ser på ordenes råderum. Jeg har erfaret at forfattere, forlæggere og litterære kritikere har en udpræget tolerance, mens folk der beskæftiger sig med kommunikation, strategi, krise- og konflikthåndtering og sociale medier har gjort kort proces. Samlet set har alle de støttehenvendelser, jeg har modtaget privat, overbevist mig om, at der er en stor opinion derude, som synes at noten var helt i orden. Der er ingen tvivl om, at de mange tusinde mennesker, der rasede mod noten, repræsenterer andre mange tusinde mennesker. Men de talrige direkte henvendelser til mig, er samtidig en interessant indikation af, at der findes parallelle opinioner, der arbejder i separerede formsprog.
En kvindelig læser skrev til mig, at jeg ufortrødent skal ytre det, der ligger mig på sinde, uden hensyntagen til hvordan det måtte lande hos andre, kvinder som mænd. Hun synes, skrev hun, at censur og social kontrol lægger sig lige i slipstrømmen på kritikken.
Endnu en kvinde, en forfatter, skriver at det hele er skørt og ude af proportioner, og hun sender mig ”et stille hjerte”. Hun har blandet sig i debatten, fortæller hun: ”Der godt nok ikke er højt til loftet, man må ikke kikse, vi har kun det perfekte og psykopaten tilbage, det bekymrer mig i forhold til den offentlige debat. Også at man ikke længere ser ting i en større helhed, men kun reagerer på en enkelt scene. Jeg frygter at fjolset er på vej ud, jeg er et fjols, der ryger finker af panden af og til, det håber jeg da virkelig kan tilgives, jeg og du lytter jo hvis nogen siger: det var sgu da åndssvagt sagt. Så nuancerer man måske sit synspunkt, hvis nogen er søde lige at forklare.”
En forfatter, en mand, går i rette med min undskyldning for fejlslagen satire: ”Din note var skrap og fræk, og har en relevant motivering i den mondæne ende af tidsånden og den mediestrategiske fims, som også har ramt forlagene med de opsvulmede og enerådende marketingafdelinger. At slå en streg over sit gode formål med en undskyldning, der forvandler et lille svirp til en fastslået formastelighed, tjener ikke noget (godt) formål. Jeg taler af erfaring. Sådan nogle skal vi kunne blive ved med at skrive. Ellers tjener vi totalitarismen.”
Det er ekstremt tankevækkende. Men jeg fortryder ikke at jeg sagde undskyld, for mit formål var jo ikke at skabe vrede og forargelse. Mit formål var at satirisere lystigt og jeg missede målet. Men samtidig er det jo så indlysende sandt, at vi tjener totalitarismen, hvis vi lader selvcensuren råde. Vi skal ikke skrive Samisdat-satire i Danmark.
Så kommer der en sms fra en forfatter, der kender hele det litterære tabernakel indefra, altid har søgt grænsen for det tilladelige og ofte fået hug for det. Hun skriver: ”Virkelig, virkelig sjov spidning af kendisforfattertendensen (og lidt ond jo også) Spot on!”
Jeg svarer, at jeg troede at noten var gangbar som satire, men at alle hader mig. Hun svarer: ”Åh, det er en frygtelig følelse! Men efterhånden sker det for selv de bedste. Man må intet. Du overlever, bare ignorer det.”
