Undergang. Søren Staal Balslevs dystopiske debut vækker tanker uden at vælte verdensbilleder.

Søren Staal Balslevs debutroman, De rensede, bringer mindelser om en af min barndoms mest prægnante fjernsynsoplevelser, The Survivors, BBC-serien, som det danske monopolfjernsyn viste 1975-77. Serien havde en ekstrem fascinationskraft som mit første møde med den ultimative dystopiske apokalypse. Langt senere lærte jeg Richard Matheson I Am Legend og Cormac McCarthys The Road at kende – for nu bare at nævne nogle – og forstod, at apokalypsen er en menneskelig grundfortælling op gennem kulturhistorien, fordi det er nødvendigt at mytologisere det uundgåelige spørgsmål: Hvordan gør vi, hvis vi er nødt til at begynde forfra? Det ligner en slags skabelses- og rekonstruktionsberetning, men handler dybest set om, hvordan vi er mennesker netop nu.

Det kræver et vist mål af dristighed at skrive en dansk apokalypseroman, når man i forvejen har skrevet en ph.d. i amerikanske apokalypseromaner. Men den dristighed har Søren Staal Balslev. Spørgsmålet er så om han kan omsætte akademisk viden til skønlitterær form.

De rensede foregår i København i årene efter en (ikke nærmere specificeret) verdensomspændende epidemi, der stort set har fjernet menneskeheden fra jordens overflade. De få, som ikke er bukket under for sygdommen, forsøger at opretholde livet, enten som enspændere eller i små grupper. Hvad betyder denne masseuddøen for de overlevendes måde at være mennesker på? Hvad er stærkest, egoisme eller solidaritet? Hvem tør man stole på? Hvordan skaber man nye fællesskaber?

Romanen følger et ægtepar og deres 17-årige datter gennem nogle dramatiske dage. Pigen er syg af høj feber, og de forsøger at hutle sig igennem i en lejlighed i Københavns nordvest. På et togt gennem byen kommer manden i kontakt med en mystisk gruppe, der har samlet sig på Christiania, og de vil hjælpe hans datter, hvis han først påtager sig at overvåge en anden gruppe, der holder til ved hovedbanegården. Herefter udvikler dramaet sig.

Som ekspert i apokalypsefiktioner har Søren Staal Balslev udmærket styr på det klassiske plots basispakke. Og han forsøger på ingen måde at rykke ved genrekonventionerne. Handlingsbanerne er derfor noget endimensionelle og ferske, miljøbeskrivelserne af den postapokalyptiske storby føjer ikke nyt til det forventelige, og romanen åbner ikke nye døre til eksistentielle refleksioner om menneskehedens overlevelsesevne.

Alligevel er De rensede interessant socialrealisme fra en dystopi, vi gerne undværer. I denne radikaliserede fremskrivning, er vi nemlig ikke henvist til en nyreligiøs og nyfascistisk verden efter klimasammenbruddet, som i for eksempel Margaret Atwoods Tjenerindens fortælling, og romanen er derfor ikke en fortælling om de retfærdiges oppositionskamp mod magtens ondskab. Nej, her er vi i en verden, hvor naturen tager domænet tilbage, og hvor ingen af de overlevende har samlet riget. I dette limbo burde de sidste mennesker samarbejde til fælles bedste, men romanen lader os forfalde til rivaliseringer, vold og slaveri. Den ægte dystopi er ikke sygdommen, der udsletter 99% af verdens befolkning. Det er derimod den umenneskelighed, der præger de overlevende. Til sidst tager den lille familie konsekvensen og deler ”en uventet samhørighed, denne glødende vilje til at undsige sig det hele.”

Søren Staal Balslev har tydeligvis genrelitterære ambitioner på sit forskningsfelts vegne, og pressemeddelelsen siger, at han er ”en stærk ny stemme i dansk litteratur, en forfatter der med en tilbagelænet fortællestil tilføjer den globale dystopi og klimaangst en særegen nordisk tone.” Det er, må jeg sige, nok at tage munden vel fuld. De rensede er stort stof i lille format, der interesserer uden at at fascinerer og vækker tanker uden at vælte verdensbilleder. Som prosa er romanen næsten lydefri uden at være decideret velskrevet, men som københavnerdystopi med klare topografiske spor, fuldfører den en udmærket underholdende mission.
