Frie ord? Norsk ytringsfrihedsfond blander sig i fyringen af redaktøren for The New York Review of Books, der bragte kontroversielt essay om #MeToo.

Mystikken stiger om fyringen af den hollandske historiker, menneskerettighedsprofessor og forfatter Ian Buruma, som i september fik sparket som redaktør af The New York Review of Books (NYRB) efter kun et år på posten. Fyringen kom efter at magasinet havde bragt en artikel, hvor den canadiske musiker og radiovært, Jian Ghomeshi skrev om, hvordan han havde oplevet at blive beskyldt for en lang række seksuelle krænkelser i 2014.

Jian Ghomeshis ‘Reflections from a Hashtag’, som var bestilt af redaktøren selv i anledning af debatten om #MeToo, blev hurtigt mødt med massiv kritik, ikke mindst i en storm på Twitter (BØGER den 21. september), hvorefter magasinets ejer Rea Hederman, bad chefredaktøren om at pakke papkassen. Ian Buruma selv sagde, at han var blevet fyret af Twitter. Han havde ønsket, fortalte han, at nuancere #MeToo-debatten, men han blev tvunget væk, fordi de magtfulde universitetsforlag truede med at trække deres dyrebare annoncer væk fra magasinet.

Rea Hederman svarede, at fyringen alene skyldtes, at Ian Buruma havde tilsidesat redaktionens principper ved at bringe artiklen uden at lade den gennemlæse af flere redaktører. Han viste kun manuskriptet til én redaktør, hvilket er i modstrid med magasinets lange tradition for kollektiv redigering. Det var desuden en mandlig redaktør. Ingen af NYRB’s fire meget erfarne kvindelige redaktører blev inddraget i processen.

Da Ian Buruma i 2017 blev udnævnt til redaktør af NYRB, var der ellers tale om en tillidssag af de helt store. Magasinet – der udkommer hver anden måned og handler om alt hvad der er vigtigt – havde indtil da kun haft én eneste redaktør siden første nummer kom på gaden i 1963, nemlig grundlæggeren selv, Robert B. Silvers (sammen med Barbara Epstein indtil hendes død i 2006). Udpegningen af den nye redaktør blev præsenteret som et spørgsmål om kontinuitet. Ian Buruma havde i en årrække skrevet for NYRB, og selvom han ikke havde nogen som helst erfaring som redaktør, virkede valget oplagt. Som udgiveren Rea Hederman sagde:

”Jeg har kendt Ian siden 1985 og ved, at hans lange tilknytning til the Review vil sikre at dets værdier og redaktionelle linje vil blive opretholdt. Ians lange bekendtskab med magasinets grundlæggere vil sikre den redaktionelle kvalitet og uafhængighed, som the Review har været kendt for siden sit første nummer i 1963.”

Kort efter fyringen offentliggjorde 109 af magasinets bidragydere, herunder en lang række prominente forfattere, et åbent brev. Store kanoner som Anne Applebaum, Ariel Dorfman, Alan Hollinghurst, Michael Ignatieff, Joyce Carol Oates, Ian McEwan, Lorrie Morre, Colm Tóibín m.fl. mente, at Ian Buruma var en fremragende redaktør, og at han næppe var blevet fyret på grund af selve artiklen, men af hensyn til den storm mod ham, der rejse sig på Twitter. Forfatterne skrev: ”Vi finder det meget foruroligende at offentlighedens reaktion på en enkelt artikel – som nogle af os har fundet frastødende – skulle være årsagen til at Ian Buruma er blevet tvunget fra posten.” Forfatterne mente, at fyringen var i modstrid med NYRB’s centrale mission, som er en intellektuel debat og fri udveksling af ideer.

Under det åbne brev havde redaktionen tilføjet et kort svar: ”Vi forstår vores bidragsyderes bekymring. Rea Hederman, udgiveren af the Review, har offentligt sagt, at Ian Burumas afgang ikke var en reaktion på vreden over ‘Reflections from a Hashtag’, og vi tror fuldt og fast på Reas forpligtelser overfor redaktionel frihed. Hvad nødvendigheden af åben intellektuel debat og den frie undersøgelse af ideer i vores spalter angår, kunne vi ikke være mere enige.”

I forrige uge kom det så frem, at den store, rige og betydningsfulde norske fond Fritt Ord, som tit har arbejdet sammen med NYRB, havde bedt om – og fået – en redegørelse for fyringen. Lederen af Fritt Ords bestyrelse, menneskerettighedsforskeren Grete Brochmann sagde til avisen Klassekampen:

”Vi ser på det som en meget kedelig sag. Det er ikke offentlig kendt, hvad der var årsagen til at Buruma blev afsat, men som ytringsfrihedsorganisation er vi optaget af at redaktører skal stå på tryg grund og have frihed til vanskelige publiceringer (…) Ud fra det svar vi har fået, er der grund til at tro, at det ikke var artiklen, som var udslagsgivende for at han mistede jobbet. Men når det alligevel fremstår som om det var årsagen, mener vi at det er problematisk.”

Uden at citere fra den hemmelige redegørelse sår Grete Brochmann altså tvivl om Rea Hedermans udtalelser om fyringen. Og selv om NYRB og Fritt Ord så sent som i sidste uge holdt et fælles seminar over overskriften ‘Russia Under Putin’, vil hun i Klassekampen ikke forholde sig til fremtiden. For nok har man sat stor pris på samarbejdet, men ”der er ikke noget institutionaliseret samarbejde mellem os, det foregår på ad hoc-niveau og er til enhver til til vurdering. Vi vil fremover følge nøje med i udvikingen af denne sag.”
