Roman. Fremtidsroman om grønlandske hverdage midt i europæisk krig, krise og konflikt. Lurmærket Leine.

Og så er der jo krigen

Kim Leine: De søvnløse. 208 sider, 250 kr. Gyldendal.

Vi er i år 2025. Europa er hærget af en krig, hvis baggrund og bevægelser, vi kun bliver sparsomt ført ind i. Imens hygger puslingelandet Grønland sig i smug, mens den gamle verden brænder om dets vugge. Her er krigen som et fjernt, forbigående tankestrejf: ”Og så er der jo krigen. Denne gamle ting der sker med Europa igen, og som ingen troede kunne ske. Troppebevægelser, ødelagte byer, flygtninge, pigtrådslejre og radmagre fanger, hver dag sin katastrofe, hver dag sit ødelagte historiske bygningsværk…”

Der er stadig relativ fred indenfor Danmarks grænser, men en stor del af den voksne befolkning er mobiliseret, der er stigende dødstal, varerationering og begrænsninger i flytrafikken. Men i den lille isolerede østkystby Tasiilaq skinner solen døgnet rundt. Alt er eksponeret af det nådesløse lys, timerne glider ud i ét.

Krig, ja. Men Kim Leines De søvnløse er ikke en krigsroman. Den er en hverdagsroman. Vel at mærke hverdage svagt præget af en stor politisk omvæltning under opsejling i kulissen: På grund af den europæiske krig er Grønland isoleret fra den gamle kolonimagt Danmark, og nu er tiden måske moden til at rive sig løs?

Danske Gordon Bjerregaard er ledende læge på sygehuset, hans hustru Rikke er sygeplejerske. På den ene stue ligger den tyske turist Michelle Wulff, der har forladt det krigshærgede Europa for at finde fred på fjeldet. Men i et fald har hun brækket begge ankler, og nu ligger hun på sygehuset, hvor hun – uden at vi får at vide hvordan – har indledt et hemmeligt forhold til Gordon. Alle ved det, men går stille med dørene. Rikke resignerer.

En dag kommer den mentalt forstyrrede Sivert med de religiøse åbenbaringer ind på Michelles stue. Hun synes at han ligner et ikon. Kort efter tænker han det samme om hende: at hun er ikonisk, en engel indrammet af en guldfrise. Pludselig er Sivert på flugt op i fjeldet. Han forlader hospitalet i sin hvide slåbrok, og da han vader gennem i strandkanten, ligner han er en ånd, der går på vandet. Gammel folketro og kristendom mødes, det åndelige og det legemelige spejler hinanden, og da det kommer til en konfrontation i fjeldet, bliver rollerne byttet om. Hvem er den rationelle, hvem er fantasten?

De søvnløse er på én gang diskret politisk science fiction og en lille arbejdsplads- og kollektivroman om fordringsløse mennesker, der går ind og ud af hinandens liv. At det tordner i syd, spiller ikke den helt store rolle. At løsrivelsen ligger lige om hjørnet, gør heller ikke.

Vi får naturligvis ikke lov at glemme, at der findes en verden i forandring derude, måske finest skildret da en fisker smider torskeindvolde ud til mågerne: ”For nogle år siden ville han have taget indvoldene med hjem til hundene (…) Men hundene har han skudt, hver og en, ligesom alle andre fangere i distriktet har skudt deres hunde. Ingen grund til at have hund når isen og sneen forsvinder fra landet, sådan som det er sket de sidste tyve år.”

Klimaforandringer anskuet gennem overflødiggørelsen af slædehundene. Mere er der ikke brug for. For Tasiilaqs indbyggere – og for Kim Leine – handler det hele nemlig om det nære, ja selv den forestående løsrivelse synes ikke at optage dem synderligt. Er det mon realistisk?

De søvnløse er lurmærket Leine. Det er håndværksmæssigt perfekt, godt og glat. Og endnu et bevis på forfatterskabets omskiftelighed fra bog til bog: fra nutiden til 30’erne, til nutiden igen, tilbage til 1800-tallet, videre til besættelsestiden – og nu et hop ind i fremtiden.

Forlaget meddeler, at der måske kommer en roman mere om de samme mennesker, som foregår seks måneder senere, hvor det er mørkt døgnet rundt. En fin og dristig idé. Men Grønlands løsrivelse må så foldes ud, og Kim Leine må for alvor vise, at han kan sætte grønlandske hverdage ind i en plausibel fremtidsramme uden at det politiske bliver staffage og pligtfri spekulation.
