Krig. Når vi sender unge mennesker til steder, der gør deres frygt til had, bør konsekvenserne ikke overraske os.

Soldatens skrøbelighed

Da det berømte Slaget ved Gettysburg under Den Amerikanske Borgerkrig i 1863 slutede efter tre hårde dage, blev de dyrebare geværer samlet ind ude på slagmarken, og det viste sig at de fleste af dem stadig var ladte. Hvorfor havde soldaterne ikke skudt?

Dette gode spørgsmål lægger den britiske forfatter, komiker, programvært og nu dramatiker Sandi Toksvig (datter af den store danske udenrigskorrespondent Claus Toksvig) i munden på Major Oscar Hadley i begyndelsen af det intense krigskammerspil Bully Boy, der åbnede i Southampton i 2011 og nu er bragt til København af det herboende That Theatre Company, der drives af Ian Burns, som selv spiller rollen som majoren, der sendes til en krigszone – Afghanistan eller Irak – for at forhøre den unge soldat Eddie Clark (Simon Kent), der er under anklage for at have dræbt en otteårig dreng, som er blevet smidt ned i en brønd.

Private Clark er medlem af en deling, der går under navnet Bully Boys, altså Bøllerne eller Tyranerne, som har flere drab på civile på samvittigheden. Han kan ikke forstå at systemet nu kommer og anklager ham, for at bekæmpe alle de lokale sandniggers og cameljockeys. Majoren siger, at soldaterne ikke har ret til at ignorere loven, bare fordi de arbejder i lovløse stater. Han indskærper også, at man ikke må dehumanisere fjenden ved at give dem øgenavne. Man tænker: Abu Ghraib.

Naturligvis er den unge menige også selv et offer for den krig, som politikerne har sendt ham ud i uden at erkende eller anerkende de menneskelige konsekvenser. Han lider under vægten af sine egne handlinger og bliver på et tidspunkt indlagt på et mentalhospital, hvor han skal behandles for posttraumatisk stress. Han får både elektrochok og terapi, og vi møder ham både i savlende apati og satirisk-sarkastisk parodi på psykologen, der vil have ham til at tegne et tog med de vigtigste personer i hans liv som passager. Han svarer at i sådan et tog er det kun ham selv, der lever, og at han løber oppe på taget, mens toget drøner af sted.

Som kontrast til den unge mand, står den modne oberst. Eller rettere: sidder. Han er bundet til en kørestol, og da private Clark spørger hvorfor, svarer obersten blot, at han gjorde tjeneste ved Falklandskrigen i 1982. Først sent indser vi, at han ikke mistede førligheden i kamp, men at han blev invalideret på krigsskibet, der transporterede soldaterne hjem efter at krigen var slut. Han var tilsyneladende en irriterende nørd, som de øvrige soldater ville give en lærestreg ved at skubbe ham ned gennem en luge.

Faldet gennem lugen kommer til at spejle drengens fald ned i brønden, og da oberstens pinlige sandhed er afsløret af soldaten, nærmer de sig for alvor hinanden, blandt andet i en rørende scene, hvor den unge soldat hiver den invalide mand op af stolen så han kan stolpe rundt til sin ungdoms Kool & the Gang.

Men Bully Boy er ikke en feel good-fortælling. Den bærer tragediens stigmata helt fra begyndelsen, eller rettere sagt: Private Clarke gør. Krig brændemærker nogle af dens unge mænd, enten fysisk eller mentalt, og som obersten siger, er der flere soldater der er døde af selvmord efter Falklandskrigen, end der faldt på slagmarken. Selv mistede han benene, men Margaret Thatcher blev genvalgt, konstaterer han lakonisk.

Eddie Clark vil tilbage til ørkenkrigen, tilbage til ligesindede. Men han får ikke sin kontrakt med militæret forlænget, og han ender med at begå selvmord, det eneste skud han nogensinde fyrer af. Oberst Hadley minder om, at når vi sender unge mennesker til steder, der gør deres frygt til had, bør vi ikke blive overraskede, når de ikke kan vende hjem uden at psykiske problemer.

Ian Burns og Simon Kents stærke samspil bærer solidt Sandi Toksvigs dybt interessante tekst, der egentlig ikke er kritisk overfor de krige, som Vesten de senere år har ført i Mellemøsten, men skal ses som en skildring af menneskelig fragilitet hos de mænd, der betaler prisen.
