“Du har det let. Du er død”

Den gartneruddannede hollandske forfatter Gerbrand Bakker (navnet lyder som en lokalitet på Djursland!) har fået sig et seriøst gennembrud hos de europæiske kritikere.

Debutromanen Ovenpå er der stille vandt i 2006 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, verdens mest pengestærke litteraturpris på hele 100.000 €, som uddeles af Dublins biblioteker, gavmildt sponseret af en virksomhed, der tjener penge på noget, der hedder Management Productivity Improvement.

To år efter udkom Juni, den smertefulde historie om et barn, der bliver kørt ihjel under et dronningebesøg i den sommersøvninge hollandske provins, og nu er også Gerbrand Bakkers tredje roman klar på dansk, den suverænt stilsikre De omweg, på dansk Omvejen.

Det er historien om en kvinde i trediverne, som pludselig har forladt sin mand i Holland for at isolere sig i et lejet dødsbo et tilfældigt sted i det landlige Wales. Med sig har hun et bind digte af den amerikanske forfatter Emily Dickinson, som hun vil skrive en afhandling om. Dertil et foto af forfatteren og en biografi om hende. Og så ikke mere. Udover alle hemmelighederne.

Det viser sig, at kvinden har haft en affære med en ung studerende på universitetet i Amsterdam, hvor hun underviser. Hun har tilsyneladende gjort regnskabet op med sin mand, men langsomt afdækkes hans reaktion på hendes utroskab, og det viser sig at hendes flugt ikke er foregået i fuld værdighed. Og det er hans hævnforsøg heller ikke.

I Wales søger den hollandske kvinde ensomheden, men alle tager sig ret til at invadere hendes cirkler – en bidsk grævling, en besidderisk og småtruende landmand, en ung knægt og hans hund, den lokale læge, frisøren, bageren, gæssene der græsser ved dødsboet…

Og så er der den tilbagevendende erindringen om onklen, der ville begå selvmord. Med lommerne tungt lastet gik han ud i vandet. Men det var ikke dybt nok. Nej, livet er ikke nemt, og kvinden vender hele tiden tilbage til sin dødsfikserede 1800-talsdigter. Hun stirrer Emily Dickinsons portræt lige ind i øjnene: “‘Du har det let,’ sagde hun. ‘Du er død’.”

Grebrand Bakker fortæller sin historie med et godt blik for det illusive stof, der binder isolerede hændelser sammen til helheder, og hans portræt af den gådefulde kvinde er ikke mindst baseret på det usagte. Tag nu noget så simpelt som et navn. Hun siger selv at hun hedder Emilie, men er det til at stole på? Hvordan hænger slægtsforholdene mellem de lokale sammen? Hvad er den unge mands egetlige æriende? Hvem var kvinden, der boede i huset tidligere? Hvordan skal man tolke det, at den nataktive grævlingen bider kvinden ved det klare dagslys? Og hvad er det for en hemmelighed om kvinden, som den bedragne mands læge næsten kommer til at røbe?

Omvejen er intelligent, lapidarisk prosa og en stærkt symbolladet roman om en kvindes isolation. Emilie kopierer Emily (en vis biografisk og litterær interesse for Emily Dickinson støtter læsningen af romanen) i sin virkelighedsflugt uden på nogen måde at idealisere hende, og Gerbrand Bakker bruger poesien varsomt og sparsomt, indtil han lader romanen tone ud i et digt, som har givet kvinden på flugt grund til at reflektere over sprogets bydemåde og ønskemåde.

Der er ingen genveje til Omveje. Den kræver sin tid, men giver gavmildt igen, ikke mindst i den temmelige gådefulde, spooky og passiv-aggressive stemning, der opstår mellem de rurale walisere og den utro akademiker fra Amsterdam.
