Tour de Brian

Markedet har kendt genren siden farfar var dreng: Sportsstjernens historie i bogform, fortalt til og nedskrevet af en journalist. I de senere år er denne type bøger væltet frem, og kvinderne har været lykkelige for at kunne købe dem til deres mænd, som ellers ikke gider læse.

Genrens kommercielle gennembrud kom for alvor i 2005 med Stig Tøftings (og Lars Steen Pedersens) No regrets og senere David Nielsens (og Jonas Ankersens) Sorte svin. Hvis bare de er ordentlige, skaber de ingen interesse, jeg ved det, for jeg har selv engang bidraget til genren som hyret hånd med en bog, hvor hovedpersonen slet og ret var for pæn og sympatisk.

Nu kommer så Brian Holms Sportsdirektøren (i samarbejde med Tonny Vorm). Den professionelle cykelsport har naturligvis alt det drama, der skal til, og hvis personhistorien er stærk nok, er potentialet på markedet også enormt, hvilket man så med Lars Steen Pedersens biografi om svindleren, løgneren og – underligt nok – folkehelten Bjarne Riis.

Sportsdirektøren giver ikke et retrospektivt totalbillede, men et snapshot fra en enkelt sæson (2011) i cykelsporten. Brian Holm har tidligere fortalt om sit dopingmisbrug i 90’erne, og derfor må vi denne gang nøjes med små røverhistorier og anekdotiske afsløringer fra det internationale cykelcirkus. Det er ikke vanvittigt kontroversielt, men alligevel særdeles underholdende:

I et løb i Californien skulle en af Brian Holms unge ny-professionelle ryttere på podiet for at have vundet bjergtrøjen. Desværre var han allerede kørt med ledsagervogn hjem til mad og massage på hotellet, så Brian sendte bare en anden neo-pro rytter, en ung tjekke, op til præmieoverrækkelsen, ingen kunne alligevel kende forskel på de unge, tænkte ham. Men så ville guvenør Arnold Schwartzennegger gerne hilse på bjergrytteren, fordi de begge kom fra Østrig! Så luskede sportsdirektøren af, temmelig kujonagtigt, og bagefter indkasserede han en skideballe fra løbsarrangøren. Da han spørger den unge tjekke, hvordan han havde klaret sig ud af kattepinen, fviser det sig, at rytteren ikke rigtig vidste hvem ham Schwartzennegger var…

Brian Holm er et interessant bekendtskab, der reflekterer udmærket over den kyniske og kaotiske industri, som han til tider har svært ved at holde ud, men som han heller ikke kan leve uden. Hans makker, Tonny Vorm, har en solid indsigt i cykelsporten, og han skriver med den erfarne reportagejournalists sikre håndelag (uden at forsøge noget nyt med genrens stil).

Hvis man følger den professionelle cykelkaravanes sommertogt, er denne Tour de Brian om en sæson i sportsdirektørens arbejdsliv ganske vellykket læsning før, under og efter endnu en bjergetape med Sofaholdet. Ingen store afsløringer, men en fin lynvisit med snik snak bag facaden.
