Nordisk Råds Litteraturpris 2012. Vi anmelder vinderen: norske Merethe Lindstrøms roman ‘Dager i stillhetens historie’.

Indtrængeren

Der hviler en solformørkelse over Simons sind, en hemmelighed som hans kone Eva kender, men som de ikke kan tale om. Hverken med hinanden eller med deres børn. At Simon stammer fra Tyskland og er jøde, må ikke være en del af familiens fortælling. Og slet ikke, at hans slægtninge døde i nazisternes gaskamre. Det er et tabu støbt ind i tavshed og fortrængning.

Men også Eva bærer rundt på en ordløs erindring. Ingen skal vide, at hun som ganske ung opgav at være mor for sin lille søn. Bortadoptionen hviler som en slagsskygge over hende, men den skal forblive en hemmelighed. Tvungen stilhed er ægteskabets vilkår.

Den norske forfatter Merethe Lindstrøm (f. 1963) har med Dager i stillhetens historie skrevet en intens, knivskarp og mildt besættende psykologisk thriller om tavshedens tyrranni – og romanen er den fortjente vinder af Nordisk Råds Litteraturpris 2012.

Thriller? Skrev jeg virkelig det? Ja, men vel at mærke en thriller af den slags, hvor den uheldsvangre koldrislen ned ad ryggen stammer fra kammerspillet mellem mennesker, der er alt andet end farlige. Faktisk er de det farliges modpol: de er tæmmede. Simon og Eva har tæmmet hinanden i sådan en grad, at deres ærlighed er forvitret, deres ægthed er gået tabt. Tilbage står deres systematiske undertrykkelse af livets sandheder. Det er instinktiv selvbeskyttelse.

Romanen åbner med Evas erindring om dengang hun viljeløst og tankeløst lukkede en ung mand ind i hjemmet, mens børnene var helt små. Ikke truende, men dog foruroligende, gik han rundt i huset. Hvad ville han? Hvem var han? Mens Eva kort vender opmærksomheden mod sin yngste datter, forsvinder manden ud af huset. Og så opdager hun, at den ældste datter også er væk!

Merethe Lindstrøm spekulerer ikke i chokeffekten, for sekundet efter er pigen fundet ude i haven. Hun peger stille mod skoven, hvor den unge mand måske er forsvundet hen? Dramaet er gået i opløsning, skulle man synes, men scenen er ekstremt uhyggelig. Eva har selv lukket indtrængeren ind, og i resten af sin levetid husker hun det som episoden – det græske ord, der betyder indgang, noget der er bygget op af flere dele, et indskud i tragedierne, en forventning om at der skal ske noget mere. Men den unge mand kom ikke igen. Der skete ikke mere.

Hermed er romanens hovedmotiv introduceret: Indtrængeren. Vi møder ham ikke igen, og det er heller ikke nødvendigt. Hans invasion af Evas liv og erindring er permanent. Hun opfatter ham som en trussel, men senere i livet spørger hun sig selv, om han mon søgte tilflugt fra noget – eller om han ledte efter nogen. Vi andre spørger, om det mon er en bortadopteret dreng, der leder sin mor?

Merethe Lindstrøms roman er en undersøgelse af stilhedens og tavshedens kvælertag på det ældre ægtepar. Hvordan forløses traumerne? Kan man prikke hul på den historiske hinde?

Deres døtre har aldrig lært sandhederne at kende, og nu hvor forældrene er blevet gamle og Simon viser tegn på demens, opdager de at det er mere end svært at trænge ind bag facaderne. De opfordrer Eva til at sende Simon på plejehjem, men i stedet hyrer hun en hushjælp, Marija fra Letland. Dermed kommer romanens anden indtrænger ind i billedet. Nu åbner en ny episode sig, og naturligvis forlader hun ikke tingene i samme orden som hun fandt dem.

Dager i stillhetens historie skildrer tavshed og tabuer viklet ind i falsk tryghed. Det er en ekstremt koldt og uhyggeligt diagnose.
