Mand i tranedans

Jeg må tilstå, at prisbelønnede og meget populære Levi Henriksens Lige østen for regnenhar været laaaaaangsom læsning, hvor jeg nærmest har haft moralkvababbelser over ikke at elske det lavmælte og melankolske norske portræt af en mand på jagt efter rødder og identitet. Nej, jeg har aldrig været den store fan af de nyere norske bygdekrøniker, så er det sagt. Anne B. Ragdes grusomt storsælgende Berlinerpopler-trilogi lærte jeg ganske vist at holde af hen ad vejen, men det tog sin møjsommelige tid. Og med skam at melde finder jeg at de finlitterære Jon Fosses og Per Pettersons smukke, indfølte prosa ofte er skæbnesvangert tempoløs.

Det samme kan jeg nu sige om Lige østen for regnen, der i stil og stemning sandsynligvis er i perfekt pagt med livet og hverdagen i de norske udkanter – som f.eks. det lille (fiktive) lokalsamfund Skogli, hvor dele af forfatterskabet foregår. Og det er ikke fordi, der ikke sker noget i romanen, nej problemet er snarere, at sprogtonen er så utrolig rustik. At læse Levi Henriksen er som at stirre ind i en stue med tunge møbler og standerur. Tik. Tak.

Romanens hovedperson er journalisten Simon Smidesang, der på sin femårs bryllupsdag forlader sin kone, fordi han tager hende på fersk gerning i utroskab. Hvem hun er utro med, får vi først at vide hen mod romanens slutning, og det kommer som en bombe, så vi meget bedre forstå, hvorfor Simon vandrede ud af ekskonens liv for at begynde forfra på sit eget. Af samme grund er jeg nok nødt til at holde det hemmeligt her.

Den forsmåede mand flytter til slægtens hjemstavn, hvor han overtager bedsteforældrenes hus. Han medbringer en tung bagage af disillusion og uforløste følelser – og en urne med asken af sin netop afdøde far, der på dødslejet havde stillet Simon det problematiske spørgsmål: ”Har jeg været en god far?” Da Simon endelig svarede, hviskede han nej, ”men faren havde bare smilet, som om han heller ikke denne gang havde forstået hvad sønnen sagde.”

Simon slår sig ned som lokal postmand, og så skildrer romanen ellers hans møde med de småsære, hjertelige og ikke mindst hemmelighedsfulde naboer fra Skoglis lilleverden. Lige østen for regnen folder sig herefter ud som en melankolsk tilstandsroman, hvor bygdens fortielser og røgslør står for fald i takt med at Simon leder efter sin plads mellem barndommens religiøse dogmer, ekskonens fatale bedrag, minderne om faren og muligheden for ny kærlighed.

Lige østen for regnen er stærkest i skildringen af Simon som en mand i tranedans – helt bogstaveligt. Tranerne bliver først et smukt symbol på ægtefællers loyalitet, og da Simon på et tidspunkt røber sin hemmelighed og tager flugten ind i en opskræmt fugleflok, bliver tranerne til den skærsild, han må igennem for at kunne komme videre i sit liv. Melankolsk på den tålmodighedstærende måde.
