Storyteller. Vellykket og gavmild roman fra Thorstein Thomsen i krønikestilen fra Morten Ramsland og Kim Blæsbjerg.

Det usynlige kainsmærke

En roman, der spænder fra 1936 til 2006 har et storpolitisk tagselvbord at hente fortællinger, skæbner, miljø og smag og farve fra. Det kan være besættelsen, befrielsen, månelandingen, ungdomsoprøret, Vietnam-krigen, den kolde krig, kommunismens sammenbrud, apartheids afskaffelse, islamterrorismens ankomst osv. osv., men Thorstein Thomsen ignorerer med fuldt overlæg det hele. Selvom vores hovedperson bor i venstreorienterede miljøer i Vesttyskland i 70’erne, hører vi ikke noget om Rote Armee Fraktion, og faktisk er det kun Murens fald, der nævnes for alvor, og det er i øvrigt ganske en passant. Hvorfor mon?

Fordi Sne på hendes ansigt ikke er en politisk roman, ja det er ikke engang en roman om samfund, men om mennesker. Ganske vist er miljøbeskrivelsen og mentalitetsportrætterne korrekte, overbevisende og tidssvarende, men dybest set er det hverken byen eller verden, der optager Thorstein Thomsen, det er menneskene. Romanen prøver derfor ikke at være en krønike om en tid, men en krønike om de mennesker, der udgør en familie på ondt og godt.

Fraværet af det politiske er ganske markant, men vel at mærke på en befriende måde, og hvis man har læst Thorstein Thomsens forrige roman, Den, der hvisker, lyver, ved man heldigvis at han udmærket er i stand til at sætte det politiske på spidsen, hvis det er det, han vil. Men med Sne på hendes ansigt er ambitionen en anden: Det er ikke de ydre begivenheder, men de indre, som udgør historiens kerne, drive og drama for slægten Kryle, som vi følger gennem 70 år.

Romanen åbner da Michala i 2006 er på vej til mormorens dødsleje på sygehuset i Esbjerg. Annemarie Kryle er blevet 101 år og skal nu forlade den verden, hvor hun havde sit finest hour som profet i en obskur religiøs kristensekt i 30’erne.

Siden blev hendes liv ganske anderledes borgerligt og jordnært, men hendes skæbne er stadig rygraden i den uharmoniske og sammenhængsløse slægt, hvis medlemmer til sidst står famlende, ubekendte og tvivlrådige overfor hinanden på hospitalsstuen.

Michala er fortælleren, i bogstaveligste og dobbelt forstand. Hun har haft en karriere som storyteller på Berlins undergrundsscener, og i anledning af mormorens død, beslutter hun at samle familiens skæbner i én stor, sammenhængende fortælling, og det er ikke altid lige kønt:

”Vold var den lim, der holdt sammen på verden dengang. Vold i hjemmet, vold i skolen, vold i religionen. Jeg er vokset op i et bed af undertrykkelse, fortrængninger og forvrængninger. Nu er mormor død, og vi kan bilde os selv ind, at volden tilhører en fjern fortid. På en underlig måde blev al den vold, der omgav hende, min mor og mig, min levevej.”

Michaela lever af at transformerer begivenheder til fortællinger, og nu samler hun familiens historie i en farverig, skånselsløs og brutal krønike fuld af kærlighed, tvang, vold, misbrug, fortræd, oprør og en evig søgen efter selvstændighed, bekræftelse, tryghed og meningsfuldhed. Slægtens medlemmer rummer alt fra formørkelse til oplysning, fra svigt til solidaritet, fra kærlighed til had, og fortælleren skylder ikke solidaritet til andre end fortællingen selv, så når hun tager bladet fra munden, bliver ingen skånet. Alle masker falder, så det kan høres – og apropos faldende masker: Sne på hendes ansigt henter sin titel fra en hjertegribende passage, hvor Michala finder sin desperat alkoholiserede mor på havnefronten en tidlig julemorgen i snevejr efter en mislykket juleaften, hvor familieidyllen atter brast under den tynde fernis.

Mange år senere har Michala en samtale med sin mormor efter en juleaften, hvor alt er gået galt igen, denne gang med Michala selv i rollen som den fordrukne. Hun konstaterer, at det er som om hævnen lever sit eget liv, som om hun bærer hævnen videre som et usynligt kainsmærke.

Man har med forventning set ansatser til det store format i Thorstein Thomsens fire første romaner – ikke mindst den fine Den, der hvisker, lyver – og Sne på hendes ansigt indfrier forventningerne og forhåbningerne. Ganske vist er ikke alle de mange komponenter lige vellykkede. F.eks. er jeg ret forbeholden overfor en lige lovlig uforløst historie om en loppe i en skotøjsæske, der bliver fodret, så den til sidst er så stor, at man kan se den i øjnene og lave en hat af dens skind! Godt nok er vi i de hashtågede hippiedage, men alligevel! Til gengæld er jeg ret vild med en sær historie om den kristne sekt, der tillægger en abe, som en sømand har bragt til Esbjerg fra den anden side af jordkloden, særlige evner. Aben, der hedder noget så fantastisk som Storgorm, kan både læse, lytte og tale, mener de, og i hvert fald kan den bladre op i Bibelen. Desværre når den kristne abe aldrig at sige noget før den må forlade det jordiske liv i en af bogens særeste passager.

Fortællingen om levet liv i tre generationer Kryle er Thorsteins Thomsens store, gavmilde og vellykkede gennembrud som storyteller. Læsere der kunne lide Morten Ramslands Hundehoved og Kim Blæsbjergs Rådhusklatreren bør også kunne lide Sne på hendes ansigt.
