Doktor Dampe. Preben Harris har skrevet en biografiske fortælling om den politiske undertrykkelse af en systemkritiker i et Danmark uden ytringsfrihed.

En demokrat i lænker

Betænk det vel, at demokratiet først kom til vore breddegrader i 1849, altså lige om lidt for 160 år siden. Indtil da var munden bundet og kongen ukrænkelig, og enhver der forsøgte sig med fri tale, risikerede at smage politistatens konsekvens: censur, forfølgelse, indespærring. En af dem, der betalte den største pris, var Dr. Jacob Jacobsen Dampe (1790-1867), en politisk-demokratisk fritænker og fritaler, som det ytringsfrihedselskende land står i dyb gæld til.

Doktor Dampe måtte døje 27 års fængsel, fordi han udfordrede enevælden og krævede demokratiet indført. Hans skæbne er sådan set velkendt nok, men ikke overbelyst, selvom han var så frygtløs en demokratisk pioner, at der burde være gader, torve og priser opkaldt efter ham. Men har han bare den mindste mindeplade på en husfacade i København? Næh.

Jeg har en barndomserindring om en tv-dramatisering (for børn, tror jeg) af Doktor Dampes liv med Erik Wedersøe i rollen som dissidenten, der var forvist til statsfængselet på Christiansø, så fjernt fra Kongens København som muligt. I 2003 satte Rialto Teatret så Niels Brunses Doktor Dampe – en demokrat i lænker op med Preben Harris i hovedrollen, og nu er det netop ham, der har skrevet en biografisk fortælling om den mand, han gestaltede.

Den fhv. teaterchef har hidtil skrevet erindringer og rejseskildringer, men nu går han nye veje med Det største politiske mord, der er en skildring af Doktor Dampes liv. Forfatteren tager os med tilbage til København for 190 år siden. I den lille by vover ingen at sige ét ord, som kongen ikke påskønner – ingen udover den dristige dr. Dampe, der ved et foredrag i Helligåndskirken taler flammende om demokratiets nødvendighed. Mens han selv går selvtillidsfuld hjem gennem gaderne sammen med sin gamle, analfabetiske mor, sætter politispionerne kurs mod kongen og regeringen for at diskutere, hvilken modmagt denne frihedskonspirator skal stækkes med.

Da dr. Dampe kommer hjem til sin lille lejlighed, sker den første sammenstyrtning i hans liv. Børnene sover, men hvor er Dorthea, hans kone? Dr. Dampe hører lyde, der bringer ham til naboens lejlighed, som står tom for tiden. Han kikker forsigtigt ind i stuen, og dér, midt på spisebordet, sidder hans hustru overskrævs på en mand, der ligger på ryggen med bukserne nede om hælene. Men det er ikke nogen hvilken som helst mand. Det er dr. Dampes egen far.

Såret og chokeret må doktoren nu kaste al sin energi i frihedskampen. Men hoffet og staten har ingen forståelse for demokratiske revolutionære, og i 1820 rejses der tiltale mod Dampe, der har offentliggjort et skrift om ytringsfrihed. Han har forbud mod at tale i kirker, men samler stadig nysgerrige folk om sig i foreninger og på værtshuse, og for at tjene lidt penge og have et talerør, opretter han det satiriske ugeblad Iagttageren, hvor han bl.a. skriver:

”Munden kan bindes, men sjælene og tankerne kan ikke bindes. I de stater, som mangler frihed, skal man ikke tænke på, hvad folket siger, men på, hvad folket ville sige, hvis det måtte tale? Ja, hvilke ord ville ikke strømme fra folkets læber? Hvilke anklager mod underkuere og hemmelige voldsmænd i staterne, hvilke opregnelser af den mægtiges hidtil med tavshed forbigåede forbrydelser havde ikke lydt fra dem, der har båret lænker, mens magthaverne har strakt sig på det bløde purpurleje? Det er derfor uret at drage bevis for, hvad der tales i de friere lande, når man ikke ved, hvad der forties i de ufrie.”

Vi følger den stakkels Dr. Dampe på hans mangeårige fængselsophold i Kastellet i København og på Christiansø, hvor han i alt tilbringer 27 år efter at den oprindelige dødsdom blev konverteret til fængsel i isolation, og Det største politiske mord giver dels et dybt forstemmende billede af den antidemokratiske Danmark, dels et (måske lige lovlig konfliktfrit) billede af idealisten Doktor J.J. Dampe, der var en af Danmarks fortjenstfulde grundlovsbedstefædre.

Preben Harris har skrevet en varmhjertet, sympatisk og meget bevægende biografiske fortælling om den politiske undertrykkelse af en systemkritiker i et Danmark uden ytringsfrihed. Ikke helt roman og ikke helt biografi, forbliver bogen desværre en slags hverken eller, hvor anstrengende mange udråbstegn kompenserer for forfatterens manglende nuancer – og selvom Preben Harris skal have stor tak for at fastholde mindet om demokraten i lænker, håber jeg at dissidenten Doktor Dampe en dag får den biografisk-dokumentariske roman, han fortjener og som hans tankevækkende skæbne gør krav på. Plus en mindeplade, som man passende kunne sætte op i Kastellet, når vi næste år markerer 160 året for enevældens afslutning og Grundlovens indførelse.
