Dreng i koma. Desværre skriver Åke Edwardson sig tidligt tør for gode ideer, men sent for dårlige.

Strømmen gik ved tretiden

Når spændingsromanforfattere skriver noget andet end spændingsromaner, bliver det ofte alt andet end – ja, spændende. Seneste eksempler er de to svenskere Karin Alvtegen og Åke Edwardson, der begge har taget fri fra deckaren og skrevet en slags psykologiske kammerspil, der så demonstrativt nægter at underholde læserne. Som en roman bliver mere fin og litterær af at være småkedelig.

Åke Edwardson – kendt for krimiserien om kommissær Winter – kan slet ikke finde fodfæste med romanen Svalerne flyver så højt at ingen længere kan se dem om ægteparret Ann og Johan, der befinder sig i deres livs krise, fordi sønnen Andreas ligger i koma på sjette måned efter en ulykke i den orkanhærgede skov i Småland. Rent tematisk er han i samme boldgade som Karin Alvtegen, der i En sandsynlig historie også placerde et kriseramt ægtepar oppe i skovene. Den store ødemark findes inde i os selv, synes at være den parallelle pointe.

Det begynder særdeles lovende i Åke Edwardsons roman med den lange, poetiske og symbolske titel. Vinterstormen ankommer med stor velskrevet voldsomhed, stemningsfuldt og slet og ret uhyggeligt, hør bare den første sætning: “Strømmen gik ved tretiden.”

Det er lidt tidligt at nå en romans dramatiske og sproglige klimaks allerede i første linje, og desværre skriver Åke Edwardson sig tidligt tør for gode ideer, men sent for dårlige. Efter det ildevarslende og symbolske anslag, går strømmen nemlig ikke kun af stormen, men også af romanen, og resten ligger hen som skovens uorganiserede pindebrænde. Det kan man så vælge at tro på som en stilistisk litterær spejling af stof og stil, men det gør ikke romanen bedre.

Vi følger Ann – sygemeldt lærer på antidepressiver – og Johan – arbejdsløs snedker med alkoholikerfortid – der begge er forstenet i sorgen over 11-årige Andreas. Drengen selv – på en måde romanens egentlige hovedperson – lærer vi kun overfladisk at kende gennem forældrene.

Mens Ann sidder ved sønnens komatøse sygeleje og fortæller ham historier og stort og små, ikke mindst erindringsstumper fra ungdomsårene på egnen, opsøger Johan det sted i skoven, hvor ulykken skete. Og så forvilder han sig ind i mærkelige planer om at arrangere elgsafari for tyske turister – og i samtaler med en elg! Men efter norske Erlend Loes geniale Doppler er der vel ikke rigtig plads til flere mand-og-elg-romaner i nordisk litteratur?

Et andet fikspunkt i romanen er et træ, hvor Ann og Johan ridsede deres forbogstaver ind i barken som unge og nyforelskede. Men hvorfor kan de ikke længere finde stammen? Jo, symbolikken om sorgen og den indre ødemark er ikke til at tage fejl af, og jeg vil ikke afvise at Svalerne flyver så højt at ingen kan se dem kunne have været et velfungerende psykologisk kammerspil om koma, hvis den var holdt i væsentlig strammere tøjler.
