Oldævl. Tiden findes i parallelle universer i Peter Rønnov-Jessens nye roman.

Al tid er altid

Et uopslideligt tema for forfattere og filmfolk: Hvad er konsekvensen af en tidsrejse? Siden de første litterære fantasier om emnet dukkede op i slutningen af 1800-tallet med fortællinger af Edward Page Mitchell, Mark Twain og – først og fremmest – H.G. Wells (Tidsmaskinen, 1895), har tidsrejsen haft sin sikre plads i litteraturen. Hver generation har sine fortolkere og fornyere, for nylig kom f.eks. spanske Felix J. Palmas Tidskortet på dansk, og herhjemme har forfattere som Niels Brunse, Erwin Neutzky-Wulff og ikke mindst Svend Åge Madsen filosoferet over tidens krumspring. Og nu også Peter Rønnov-Jessen, hvis nye roman, skønt betitlet Oltidskundskab, fabulerer over det klassiske og brutalt tidsparakdosale spørgsmål: Hvad sker der, hvis man hopper i tiden og forhindrer en begivenhed i at finde sted?

Martin G er partner i et reklamebureau, der laver dødsyge kampagner for Yummy Gummi youghurt, tandpasta, hårde hvidevarer og den slags. Han er midt i 50’erne, lige lovlig drikfældig og med lidt for mange kilo på vommen. Og så er han i gang med sit tredje kriseramte ægsteskab med ung kone og barn i børnehaven. Mens hans ven og partner, den adm. direktør Flip, beslutter sig til at realisere drømmen om et tidligt otium foran staffeliet i landhuset i Toscana, kan Martin G. selv ikke komme i tanker om et eneste ideal eller en eneste ambition. Men den unge generation af kreative medarbejdere buldrer frem med lyst og vilje til at lave andet og mere end at sælge vaskepulver. De vil også arbejde for politiske partier, og Martin G. er ved at blive kørt lidt ud på et sidespor. Da han brokker sig, siger Flip blot: ”Tiderne skifter”.

Det samme tænker Martin G’s barndomsven, den ulideligt kvikke Christian, der er en både kendt og anerkendt religionsvidenskabsmand, der sidder i kørestol med lammede ben efter en vandskiulykke i 1971, som Martin måske var skyld i, dengang de to venner var 15 år. En aften, hvor Martin G bæller rødvin og Christian drikker te, fortæller videnskabsmanden sin ven reklamemanden, at det faktisk er muligt at rejse tilbage og lave om på fortiden, at forhindre vandskiulykke i at ske, uden dog at gøre det blevne ikke-blevet. Christian mener at ”al tid være altid”, og at store videnskabsmænd som Einstein og Hawking rent faktisk har rejst i tiden.

Pludselig sidestepper vi til maj 1971, eller som det hedder i romanen: ”Samtidig, engang nær midten af sidste halvdel af det tyvende århundrede”. Bemærk dette ’samtidig’, der viser tidsspringet til et parallelunivers, snarere end til en lineær fortid, hvor Martin og Christian læser til eksamen i 1.g, oldtidskundskab venter forude (deraf romanens titel). Det er en forsommer præget af eksamenslæsning, fest, forbudt forførelse, forældrenes dannede småborgerlighed og tidens musik, for som Martin kan se med sin fremtidsbevidsthed: 60’erne slutter først et stykke ind i 70’erne.

Ja, tiden og tidens begivenheder parallelforskubber sig i Peter Rønnov-Jessens mærkelige, hverdagsrealistiske og kollosalt realismefornægtende roman, hvor man som læser skal acceptere præmissen og flyde med, sådan som man skal i al anden litteratur, der spekulerer i vores opfattelse af lineær tid. For hvis tiden findes parallelt flere steder, findes den så overhovedet? Romantitlen refererer til den unge Martins eksamenslæsning, der bl.a. handler om skæbnebegrebet, hybris og nemesis, og Oldtidskundskab er dermed et filosofisk portræt af opløsningsmanden Martin G i professionel og privat krise. Tiderne skifter, fik han at vide. Men gør de nu det? Har Christian ret i at al tid er altid – samtidig? Eller hvad stiller vi op med dette uløselige paradoks? Spørgsmål uden svar – det er både styrken og svagheden i denne tvetydige roman, der på den ene side kan afvises som en uforløst fiks idé, mens den på den anden side fungerer fint som et portræt af den unge Martin spejlet i hans senere utilstrækkelighed som reklameløgner og erfaren ægteskabsfallent. Men det hele forudsætter, at man accepterer tidsparallelen som litterært greb. I så fald: Velkommen til eksamen i Peter Rønnov-Jessens oldævl anno 1971-2007.
